    Default Sprouting Lotus Seeds

Well, here's my lotus seed sprouting experiment. I followed Mo's instructions on the page she put up, and I have to say, things are looking good! At least, it feels like something's going to happen, and I won't be standing there staring at seeds that are doing zilch. Had Mo not said something, I would have been staring at seeds doing zilch for decades, since lotus seeds apparently have an outer coating that's nearly completely impermeable to water!

These are the lotus "shower heads" that everyone has most likely seen at craft stores. The dark one on the left is one that Bruce and I picked on our way down to Texas earlier this summer. There was a huge lake / swamp off the side of the road that was completely covered in lotus plants. If we had our camera, we would have taken a picture: I've never seen so many in one place all at one time. So we ventured on in to the muck (I got my shoes stuck) and snapped off a shower head. The light brown one on the right is from the plant Gilda gave us. Very weird about that one, all the seeds in it were hollow, like they had either never developed, or had gotten eaten from the inside. Just a husk, with nothing in them. Every single one of them. So I won't be able to germinate those, but maybe next blooming!

So these are the seeds from the shower head on the left, and I filed away the outer covering on one side down to almost the cotyledon so that water could get in and germinate them.

Once they were all filed on their sides, I stuck em in a cup of water.

Not twenty minutes later, the filed area has started to swell as water makes its way inside. In the pic, you can see the lump where swelling has started.

According to Mo's instruction sheet, these should about double their size and get lumpy over the next 24 hours, the water should turn brown, and several days from now, shoots should start to appear from where the cotyledons split apart.

Thanks again, Mo! I'll keep posting back as things (hopefully) develop!

cool. i can't wait to see how they develop.
it took quite a long time for my shoots to start, but again, it was probably too cold for them.

    good luck!

I'm glad it took a long time for you, mo, because it sure is taking a long time here! The water's gone all brown and mucky, the seeds have sunk to the bottom, and I don't know if they're getting ready to germinate or preparing to rot.

lol! my experiments.... thanks Tim and Gin.....

    Thumbs up

I know how to get Louis to do something....tell him it is impossible !! CONGRATULATIONS on your germination...I sure hope they are sprouting and not rotting ! Do keep us informed !
PS We use to grow moonflowers(they bloom at night and have the most beautiful fragrance) and you had to knick them and soak overnight before planting....

change the water once it gets icky, or they may rot.
also if you have a seedling mat it may speed things up. oh and lots of sun.

    Still nothing yet.

Seeds on the bottom, have been changing water once it starts turning tan, lots of warmth (the cup is in indirect sun).

I might just open one up to see what's going on inside....
