    Default Orchid Seed Question

I'm new to orchids as well. I just got some seeds and have no clue on how to so them. I bought some Orchid Medium. Do I just get a jar fill it the medium and sprinkle seeds or do I need to bleach them first?

Welcome to the forum, orchid2009! You picked the hardest beggining possible! Before you start with the seeds you have a lot of reading to do... Here are some very helpful threads for this subject. Here is a link to one that I am trying now.: http://www.rv-orchidworks.com/orchid...opagation.html
I have 3 flasks (my very first try)- two are seem to be fine so far, but one contaminated. Good luck!

The only reason I got into orchids is because I was told it was a fun and easy hobby. (Boy was I fooled) Thank you for the quick reply

I think you should try something in bloom first, before you get to the propagation part... It is fun!!! However, they need good care and lots of attention! You will love taking care of your orchids, but starting from seeds... I don't think that is a good idea. I mean you can still have a few mature plants to enjoy until you get some babies to the blooming stage (it will take a few years).

Hi Orchid2009, Margo is offering some very good advice. Growing orchids can be an exciting and fun adventure, but the reward comes when they bloom and put on their show. Starting from seed means you will be waiting several years before seeing any blooms. Why not get a plant in bud or if you prefer, get one that is Blooming Size (BS) but not in bud yet. Then you can earn the blooms.

    Cheers & welcome to OrchidTalk!

when it starts getting yellow, it is ripe enough for sowing. This point is usually after 3 - 5 months.

When you start this hobby (addiction) from wanting to grow orchids from seed. Is like before you learn to drive, you have to build a motor from the ground up for your car. It can be done, but isn't easy and is very complex. Margo and Bruce are trying to get you started on the correct path. Have Fun,Rich
