    Default Orchid Pollen Shelf Life

This question may have been asked and answered several times so please forgive me... If I harvest pollen from, let's say, a Paph or Catt or Phal, how long will it "keep" and under what conditions does one store pollen?

I put mine in paper envelopes and keep them in a pill bottle in the fridge for 1 year.

I have heard of people keeping pollen in the freezer as well, but someone with experience should confirm for you, Howard.

here in New Zealand we have a generally put the pollen in a tissue and then an envelope. This envelope is then placed in the fridge.under these conditions the pollen is good for two years, maybe more . I discard anything over 24 months old as the viability is unreliable.

I harvest pollen with a round toothpick and put it in a large gel capsule (like the kind medicine comes in.) Then, write a number on the capsule with a Sharpie and record the number and any pertinent info. I also take a picture of the flowers and store that in a file with the pollen number in the file name.

The capsules are stored in an open jar in the refrigerator. I know the pollen will last at least a year for some paphs.

I don't think a freezer is a viable option. Freezing pollen seems like it would destroy it.

I have used pollen that is three years old with good viability, but that is rare.
