Default Orchid Cross list - 2010

In 2008 I made 229 crosses, and have flasked 19 of these hybrids.

In 2009 I made 208 crosses, of which 32 are either flasked or still in pod.

I thought I would start listing the crosses I was making for the year, just as an interesting experiment and for your instant comments or discussion. Not all of these will take, obviously. And some that do take, I will not flask. All comments are welcome!

    As of 2/2/10, the Cattleyas:

Bc. Groganiae 'Mariposa Rosada' x (C. harrisoniana 'Volcano Queen' x Slc. Christopher Hauserman 'EFG')
Bc. Groganiae '#2' x (C. harrisoniana 'Volcano Queen' x Slc. Christopher Hauserman 'EFG')
Bc. Groganiae '#3' x (C. harrisoniana 'Volcano Queen' x Slc. Christopher Hauserman 'EFG')
(These are experimental, mostly to test the viability of the three clones of Groganiae)

    C. Dubiosa 'Kensington' x Blc. Mount Hood 'Orchidglade' [Sincere Wishes]
    C. Dubiosa 'Kensington' x (Blc. Satomii 'Yosoi Sweet' x C. lodigesii) 'Full Moon'
    C. Dubiosa 'Kensington' x Blc. Goldenzelle 'Frank Smith' [Blc. Mary Jo McNerney]
(Kensington is the only pink Dubiosa, and it has a white lip with a large magenta disk)

    The Paphs:

Paph. Mem. Dave Mhyre x Paph. Sander's Pride 'EV'
Paph. Sander's Pride 'EV' x Paph PEOY 'EV'
Paph. Mt. Toro 'EV' x Paph Lalita
Paph. Mt. Toro 'EV' x Paph Golddollar
Paph. Albion x Paph. Mem. Dave Mhyre
Paph. Pinocchio 'Thahn Wang' x Paph (Gratrixiae x bellatulum) 'Triple Play'
Paph. (Gratrixiae x bellatulum) 'Triple Play'
(All of these crosses are unlikely to take, but these are the kinds of Paphs I am interested in. 'Triple Play' is a pure brachy that actually blooms with three flowers per stem!)

    And the intergeneric Oncidiinae:

Burr. Stefan Isler x Odm (onc) trilobum 'Paleface'
Burr. Stefan Isler x Milt Xenia 4N
Burr. Stefan Isler x Onc. maculatum 'MAJ'
Burr. Stefan Isler x Milt flavescens 'Woodlands'
Burr. Stefan Isler x Milt Honolulu Ruby 'Rare Find'
Burr. Stefan Isler x Milt. Xenia's Cove
Burr. Stefan Isler x Mtssa Royal Robe 'Jerry's Pick'
Burr. Stefan Isler x Mtssa Ocelot 'Woodlands'
Onc Twinkle 'Red Raspberry' x Onc. Colon 'Key Lime Pie'
Onc Twinkle 'Red Raspberry' x Wils. Archirondel 4N
Burr. Stefan Isler x Asp. principissa

( I am hoping for even one of these to take)

    Wow, that is A LIST.

What if all of them are successful? How many babies you will end of with? How fun it is!

Well, I have over 100 flasks from the last two years worth of crosses, with some of my babies already out of flask. I plan on growing about 50-100 of each cross from flask, and expect to end up with about 20 plants that finally make it to blooming. Remember that one of the keys to a good hybridizing program (especially with experimental crosses) is to grow up a significant number of plants, and cull all but the strongest growers.
