Default Updates: 18th Sept 2011 Vanda Seedpods

Well they are coming along nicely now and the vanda i wasnt sure off has now started to form its seedpod.

Vandachostylis Blue Magic Seedpod.... Had to wait a while for this to form and i thought it hadnt taken the pollen but i suppose that word patience lurks its annoying head again. I also think it might not make it as the stem is starting to die off. i have included a picture of that too.

This is the flower that was pollinated

Keep us posted. Maybe a new thread? I am so anxious how it develops. It is like a virtual science project.

Sure is a pod ; but for anyone reading, and tempted to havea go ( why not ? ) remember that whilst the plant is putting its energies into growing a pod it is not putting them into making a new growth or producing a new spike... of course a styrong plant can, but even so, if it does flower again whilst carrying a pod, the new flowers won;t be as good as they might otherwise have been.
What a wet blanket I am ! Go for it !

Jason it is good that you have a inquiring mind and that your willing to experiment. I am a rather cautious person, but having said that occasionally I get a idea when I am in a 'what the hell mood' and do some reasoned experimentation myself. If the project is successful great and you fell rather proud of yourself for being so right. If wrong simply make sure there are no witnesses and you will be fine. AL

Hi Jason. Well it's been a couple of months now... so what news? Gosh I admire all you guys doing pollination. I love the idea, but the awesome timescale crushes me! It's not just orchids of course, but so many other liliopsids... from seed to flower is a looong road needing patience. Ouch! And then the knowledge that you must raise as many seedlings as you can to flower so that you can see which, if any, are really worth keeping! But I know that despite all this, pretty soon I too shalll set out on this adventure. We live in hope. After all, what else is there? Best of luck mate!
