The trouble is, our dear minister still uses film. Hence, photos aren't so easy. I can't imagine ever going back to film!

I know he took some shots a couple of weeks back, but already they'll be out of date. We're so demanding! I may have to drive up and photograph the darned flasks myself!

No worries, the lack of photos doesn't mean that things have headed south. Quite the contrary, and one jar is showing actual tufts of green...the beginnings of leaves (man, these buggers have grown faster than anything else I've grown so far). So...that being said, I have a macro set coming to me next Friday...I'll shoot and then post them. I bought the macro set special for this...well, and my minis.

Just thought I'd let everyone know that I haven't forgotten.

    Ahh...I'm feelin' the love!

I still have a Mediocalcar decoratum for you Aaron, so we should hook up sometime. But I have to admit I've been pretty darned busy.

I am curious to see what the little green snot balls look like. I haven't watched orchid seeds germinate.

Coming in on this a little late but still excited as all get out. This is something I would REALLY like to try out. So, about 5 years to fruition, eh? Heck, I thought 3 years to develope a Bonsai to a reasonable shape was a long time. Of course, a bonsai is NEVER done.

The one orchid I would LOVE to do is calypso bulbosa. That would just be the bomb. I have found a source for seed, just need to figure out he right media for it: Searching, searching, searching.

    Now to MOSF:

Default Ta da!!!! We have baby pics!

So after braving fierce margaritas and the fury of the North Atlantic, I managed to capture photos of my Catt flasks at peril to my...well...body parts. Frostbite isn't particular!

The flasks were transported in an insulated cooler lined with hot packs. Aaron brought one flask of each of the crosses, since progress was similar among the flasks of each cross. Except for the brown out, which we're still watching. Didn't see that flask today.

The photos were snapped on the dash of my car, but the flasks did enjoy lunch at the mexican restaurant. We showed them the salsa verde. Something like threatening the salad shooter if they don't grow up big and nice!

The first photo is of the Lc. Mildred Rives x C. gaskelliana cross, where Mildred was the pod parent. We have three flasks of this cross. Mildred is a very large plant, and these seeds showed activity very quickly. The protocorms, or maybe they're corms by now - please feel free to correct me - are at the surface of the medium. The browner, smaller stuff near the bottom of the jar are the seeds that didn't take. Green is good!

The second photo is of the flask from the back cross, where C. gaskelliana was the pod parent. What's amazing is how big those lil' tykes are! These were the flasks that were so slow to show any viability. I'd written them off. They got a much later start than the MR cross, and look how they've gone to town! The only differences I can think of are the pod parent was a species. What that should matter, I can't imagine. And these seeds were treated in ethanol, since the capsule had a puncture and we couldn't assume the seeds were sterile.

I think the moral of the story is, even an infant can appreciate a good drink from time to time!

These were flasked on Sept 26, 2006. That should give you some sense of the length of time required for orchid flasking: Cattleyas, in this instance. Enjoy! And thanks for your hard work, dear Minister of Silly Flasking!

Woo, flippin' hoo. The media looks like river mud and I bet it smells just as bad too!!!! (is there a "smilie" for peeyou?)

Will the little green guys in the bottom of the muck slowly work their way to plant status as well?
