interesting question - going to top it off

another question - will the removal of the pollinia result in the death of the parenting flower?

    Ok. thats what i figured.

Murray - do you know the best time since the opening of the bloom for removing the pollinia?

also - do you know other genera that paph will be more likely to successfully cross with?

I don't know when is the best time to get the pollinia but I tried to pollinate 7 flowers from 2 Phals and got 5 capsules. I wait untils all flowers are bloom; We enjoy them for 2 weeks then pollinate them.

    Colin,

there are supposedly hybrids between Paphiopedilums and Phragmipediums... they are after all registered with the Royal Hort. Society... however, the pictures that are going around of these intergeneric hybrids do not look very convincing... so maybe you could try and see if it will work for you... make sure you document the process too... you might just be the first to really prove that it is possible.

Other genera that Paphs are allied to are Cypripediums, Mexipedium, and Selenipedium... they all have the pouch as a labellum... so you could maybe try those as well...

    cheers

the best time to pollenate the flowers is up for debate, but generally as soon as the flower is fully open.

Thanks tim. I'm kind of a mad scientist, though. The kind of guy whod like to see a Paphiodontoglossum, or something of that sort - just to see something different.

    Default Pollenating tools

Well, to add a little bit to this thread, what are some of your favourite pollenating tools? Mine is a bamboo skewer like you buy at the supermaket with around 50 in a package....cheap, clean and useful for narrow throated orchids.
