Default Is this a sheath

Hi!
Please advise whether this is a sheath? The past pb's have bloomed without a sheath, this is the first one I've seen on this catt, if it is a sheath. I've gently pressed it though, and there's nothing inside, or should I just wait for the spike? The sheath (?) seems to be large, is this normal?

Looks completely healthy and normal. It IS a sheath. On hybrids, the plant can bloom either with or without a sheath..even on the same plant! Just wait for the buds to form--it can take a couple of weeks or a couple of months depending. Hold the sheath up to a strong light source and check for developing buds. See below:

We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors....but they all exist very nicely in the same box. ...Hmmm? .

Not only that, but the SAME plant can bloom one year from a sheath and the next year from none (Hybrid..not species).

Why do some of my sheaths turn brown and die?

The sheaths don't "Die" when they turn brown. Some hybrids and species bloom from dry sheaths. My C. luteola blooms from the driest and crispiest sheaths...

Clint, thanks for that idea of holding it up to the light, that's brilliant!! I have a few in this stage right now and I was wondering myself if there were buds inside, I'm gonna go try this!

Hi again!
Spike's out, and it's a triple treat!
my first two blooms were singles, perhaps the sheath helps produce multiples?
Will send more pictures when they open!
