Default Cattleya Culture

Please forgive me if this question has already been addressed, and direct me to the appropriate forum area if it has.
My understanding is that cattleyas that have been divided produce new leads from the 'young' end of the division. Sometimes from the sides. Please correct me if I'm out of place!
My question is this: If a cattleya produces several new pbulbs in a year that don't produce blooms, is it possible that these growths may produce blooms in the following years? Provided they stay healthy of course. Or do cattleyas only produce blooms on that year's new growth?

Tami

Cattleyas will not bloom twice on the same growth. If your cattleya has growth on it that is mature, but has not bloomed, it could bloom - eventually. But, once it has bloomed, it will not produce another sheath and bloom.

Cheers,
BD

We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors....but they all exist very nicely in the same box. ...Hmmm? .

Thanks, Bruce. That answers my question. I have several catts with nice mature pbulbs that have not bloomed themselves, although previous pbulbs on the same plant have. Just wondered if the newer mature growths might produce a bloom or if my hopes should be placed on the new leads growing.

this forum.

I have a really big catt that is about 10 years old I just bought from a grower. I can see clearly where it has bloomed. But, all the sheaths that have buds in them are all on new growths. I even have a brand new growth that is really fresh that is just barely starting to grow a sheath. So, the only blooming on new growths is true I think.

The Cattleyas will produce bud only if the center of the newly growth in not yellow or dry up. Once it dried up it will act as a food storage only.
