Mt Equine, here's my encyclia NYC windowsill growing experience.
I grow my encyclias on a windowsill with 50% humidity, very close to a south window which provides some full sun and some shaded bright light
depending on the time of day.
The potted ones are in fast drying medium.(charcoal/medium bark mix in plastic pots)
Water once or twice a week depending on cloudy days/temperatures etc. They like to dry out FAST. The room they are in has good air movement.
I put them outiside for the summer, early fall. (still on a windowsill!) where they get full sun in the morning and shaded light in the afternoon.
They get AM or late PM sun, or at least bright light in winter as well (NYC winters ain't what they used to be ... )
Different encyclias species will have slightly different requirements I found, depending on where they come from.
I have a mexican species, Encyclia Kennedyi, that gets a semi dry rest in the winter. I have a carribbean encyclia that likes it drier in general.
They are spiking now and one is in bloom. I hope this helps.

I only have 4 encyclias, I am space challenged and growing condition challenged as well. (I try to stay away from the ones I know I will kill obviously ..). The ones I have now are doing really well. Still, I am looking for a couple of specific species that I could probably squeeze in.

Thanks for the great information! Looks like I can mess around with some slight changes that might make these happier!
