This is a discussion on Stanhopea wardii within the Cattleyas, Vandas, Dendrobiums IN BLOOM forums, part of the Orchid Photography category; Thanks Igor & Bruce. So what's the medium in the basket then, sphagnum moss?...
Thanks Igor & Bruce. So what's the medium in the basket then, sphagnum moss?
I use 2/3 Chopped coconut fibre mixed with 1/3 sphagnum moss. Crushed charcoal goes (of course) into all my orchid media.
Sphagnum moss is now generally avoided by many folk because it retains too much water: I still use it, in moderation, to stop baskets drying out too quickly since I grow under glass... it works for me. However in pots I put less moss, or even none, depending on the orchid. You will find what suits you best.
