Default Blc. Magic of Mishima 'Volcano Queen'

This was one of my purchases from the International Orchid Fair in Santa Barbara.
I cannot take credit for the bloom as this plant was already in bud when I bought it.
The flower is HUGE! 6 inch diameter all throughout.

I am trying a different culture method for this plant. I am setting it in an empty wood basket and just let the roots grow into the empty basket.
It will be similar to being mounted but the mount material is the wood basket.

That is a very intense, luminous color ... Beautiful! Good purchase!

..oh! and I like your approach to basket culture for these...smart not to disturb the roots!

Thanks. It satisfies my lavender/magenta floof craving while I continue to search for a good Pot. Susan Fender, and waiting for my C. dowiana var. rosita seedling to bloom in 5 years

I cannot tell if there is any distinct scent yet or if it is just the "new bloom" smell - it just opened last night.
I could detect a faint citrus scent. But to me all orchids have that scent right after opening.
I'll know more when the flower matures.

Maybe its my growing conditions or just my nose. But I do not get the full scent until after the flower has been open for several days.
*Like that Onc. Sharry Baby that was in bloom for over a month. I only started smelling the chocolate scent 3 weeks into blooming.

I have Pot. Susan Fender 'Cinnamon Stick' that should bloom this Fall or at the VERY latest this Spring--the newest growth just put up a sheath. (I'll share when it blooms.)

At the very least, it LOOKS fragrant

As far as the dowiana var. rostia...I feel your pain..I have a dowiana var. aurea that probably has about 2 years before it blooms (I've had it 2 already). *SIGH*

My favorite vendor has var. rosita in a 3.5" pot for $35.00. Hmm..might be tempting...

Nice one, John. That is IN YOUR FACE PINK for sure. Sweet little dabs of yellow inside the lip, too.

Brilliant pink! WOW! Congratulations on the great find. I look forward to hearing how the basket without medium goes. Good luck.

Cheers,
BD

We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors....but they all exist very nicely in the same box. ...Hmmm? .

That really is a beauty. And I'm pleased to know I'm not the only one who gets a craving for a "fix" of some particular flower or other. Really a beauty!

The flowers are both open now (I forgot to take a new picture ) and the first flower is giving a light citrus scent.
I can smell it the moment I enter the greenhouse - almost like orange and lime peel mixed into a sweet syrup .
