Smile Den. Udom Blue X Den. Compactum

During my recuperation i've sorely missed a big spray of flowers to stare at. The lovely phal. my hubby bought me died too fast. So after a few trips around the local nurseries here are the two lovely den's I bought. The taller pink den is lacking a name as my gal hasnt called me back yet with the name. My darker shorter plant tag reads; Den Udom Blue x Den Compactum. I wonder if it has a clonal name?
The show-off in the group pic is my 'Port of Paradise'. It is doing it's best to imitate a pure Digbyana and make me very happy. I had posted it back when it opened and it didn't look like this and it's gone from 5 in's to 7 in's across.

Looks great, Connie!! The Port of Paradise does look very much like Digbyana, just a bit different lip. All very healthy looking blooms!

Cheers,
BD

We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors....but they all exist very nicely in the same box. ...Hmmm? .

I like both of your dends because they have soft pink and blue. And your Port of Paradise bloom looks beautiful.

Thanx...I know some aren't into the "common" den's but they are some of my favorites. The greenie is just a bonus...maybe next time it'll smell pretty too.

Those are both very lovely...and the catt flower looks so thick!

Den. biggibum var. compactum is probably the pollen parent on the dend hybrid. Nice!

The catt is so heavy now it is shiny and the petals in front look white now.

Beautiful dendrobiums and cattleya.

Den. Udom Blue is probably Den. Udom Blue Angel and they shortened the name to fit the tag.
I checked if the Den. Udom Blue Angel x compactum is registered with the RHS and there does not appear to be any registered cross for this.
This is not uncommon with mass produced dendrobium hybrids. The nurseries rarely bother to register the cross.
However, I am not sure if compactum is a species name or if it is a variety designation (ie: Dendrobium bigibbum var. compactum)

The Den. Udom Blue Angel is a popular parent for dendrobium hybrids though, because of its flower form, size and long spikes.

Oh cool, thanks! I chose it due to it being a blue and its a compact version of my leggy full size dens. Now the name too....now if only the nursery would call with the name of the tall pink.
Thanx again
