    Default Dendrobium Blue Violetta

This might be the last photograph for Old Spikey's flowers for this season. 52 flowers total including the last few swollen buds.
I plan to cut the spikes in a couple of days and give the plant a chance to rest.

We will be out of town for a couple of weeks after next week so we will not be home to enjoy the flowers. Might as well give Old Spikey a couple of weeks off

Another angle creating the illusion that the two spikes are just one big arch.

I would have to say, he gave me such a disappointing show this season *snicker*

This particular plant seems to love the following conditions:
    1. Warm/Very warm. My greenhouse could spike up to 105F in summer and this plant does not even have a hiccup.
    2. Moderate-High humidity. The greenhouse is kept at 60%+ humidity during the day.
    3. Heavy watering in a fast drying container. This orchid is planted in a wood basket with medium bark. Some growers say that dendrobiums want to be potbound, but this one is nowhere near being bound and the roots are free to ramble on. The potting medium is soaked with a garden hose and then allowed to dry completely before watering again.
    4. High-Very high light. My dendrobium area gets between 4500-5500fc diffused light during the brightest part of the day.
    5. Good ventilation - my dendrobiums perform much better when they are in the path of a low speed oscillating fan.

    It does NOT like:
    1. Cool/Cold conditions. Anything below 60F and this plant (along with the other dendrobiums) will throw a hissy fit.
    2. Prolonged wet conditions. Continuously watering the plant before the potting medium dries out completely will result in leaf drop and naked canes.
    3. Low light - low light conditions (below 2000fc) will result leggy, soft canes which are prone to breaking under their own weight. *If you have to stake a hard cane dendrobium because the cane is too soft, it is most likely not getting enough light.
    4. Stagnant air - without adequate ventillation, the water that deposits on the crown of the orchid will result in crown rot.
