Many thanks for your help all the way from New Zealand. It's really close but I have a clear color of white on the middle part of the flower. So unless I find it I'm going with your name.

Hi Buzz... don't want to be a stickler, but your plant is definitely not a Dendrobium bigibbum, which is a species orchid originating from North Queensland, Australia. This species orchid of course is being grown all over the world now, but even more so are the hybrids that have been bred from this species after crossing it with many other Dendrobiums.

Putting the name Dend bigibbum on your plant will cause confusion. Imagine that later as your plant becomes much bigger and you divide it and say a friend wants a division.. they will end up with a beautiful flowering plant, but with an incorrect name... and this can then go on and on....

Unfortunately getting the exact name for your orchid will more than likely depend on whether someone else has the exact same clone of the hybrid. Even the same hybrid will have different clones because some characteristic will come from Mama orchid and some from Papa orchid. So fingers crossed someone does have your exact plant.

I like Connie's idea better of course. You can call your orchid -

    Dendrobium "Purple and White Frog"

this way, everyone knows it a Dendrobium, and by putting the name in " xx " then it is signifying that it is a clonal name.

right, well, i obvously woke up from the nerd side of the bed today... so don't mind my rambling...

    cheers
    tim

    Like I said, Buzz..

The closest we can get is a Dendrobium of the section Phalaenanthae

I found this picture of an Orchid sent to our forum by Abro on Aug 11 2007 at 12:54 under the heading “Tons And Tons”. It is the third picture from the top with a man in the background with a blue T-Shirt. This is the link:

    Exclamation name of my orchid

Hi Buzz, i do have this orchid. I bought it from Singapore Mandai garden sometime ago.If i'm not mistaken it is called dendrobium ekapol. Mine does grow tall and when it blooms there's only about 3 to 4 flowers on the stalk. does your plant grow tall? What special care do you give it?
