    Default Vanda tricolor Suavis

    Hello,
This past weekend at the Chicagoland Orchid Festival, I got 2 of these, one was free with my order and the other was in kind of a grab bag. Now they are just babies and they advised probably 4 years to bloom. Ok fine. But do I need to plant these in a wooden basket? Also they are planted in like a coconut husk (sorry I haven't dealt with this medium yet) the stringy part. Should I replant these into a slotted basket or wait to see how they go? Also any recommendations since I understand that these generally don't do well in a house? Thanks for all of your help!

Every Vanda I've ever had, and I've had seedling sized plants many times now; liked wood baskets. Vanda's usually do not like their roots covered at all. I have seen seedlings sat on a bed of spagnum, but I believe that is only used when they are first out of the flask.
Having said all that....for every grower there are variations in growing methods. I've seen perfectly healthy vandas growing in pots with various mediums. I live in humid Florida so there are alot of things I can grow that way. And you are in Chicago therefore your set-up and methods probably differ widely from mine. I'd wait for a few Northern' growers to chime in on this as well...

Not that this is any advice to listen to AT ALL, but I am currently testing a vanda in hydroton! Its been in it for about 2 weeks and its not dead yet, so I'm thinking that it might, might survive!

Since they are still small, leave them in the coconut husk for awhile. Depending on your watering schedule, you can repot them if you like. Vanda roots like to get wet and dry off every day.

    Cheers,
