Bruce, I believe the taxonomists when they had a field day with the Laeliinae group decided to rename this as Sophronitis purpurata.... i am still finding it hard to keep up with where all the different species are meant to be... and partly being stubborn about accepting the name changes.

Roy, had a google around and the werckhauserii var reminds me more like the coerulea form. I did find the var schusteriana to be closer in terms of colour form.

Lealia purpurata is now Sophronitis purpurata, I believe.

I do think Laelia purpurata is now officially Sophronitis purpurata, but I'm going to reverse all my past priggishness on taxonomic precision and stubbornly go by Laelia. While at a genetic level the taxonomic shift might be a better fit, if you know the Sophronitis genus, there's no way this queen of Catts could be lumped into a small stubby orange genus.

For a taxonomist use the constantly changing name. For commercial purposes, she's a Laelia so everyone knows what you're talking about.

Tim-O is right, the werkhauseri form is a paler light gray-blue form, very close to the coeruleas in Laelias [sic.] I think this is a roxo form, and more specifically a roxo-violeta. They have the saturated purple lips, with the violeta being the much darker purple.

The guru taxonomist/breeder on Brazilian species, specializing in Catts, is Francisco Miranda. PM me Tim, and I'll get you his contact info. He'd be the one to ask.

Oh, and Tim, did I mention this is one of my favorite Catt species? And that you have a truly stunning flower! Really lovely!
