    Hello Bruce,

I do not know where you got this plant but it is not anything like the BLC Helen Brown Sweet Afton as illustrated on the cover of the catalogue soon after it gained the award. You will find a picture of my BLC Helen Brown which is identical to the one which got the award posted in Orchid talk Forum

Remember Bruce, that there can be alot of variation within a hybrid/species. This is most probably the case here.

    Hello Jordan,

I have been growing Cattleyas for about 50 years.

I do not have to "remember" as I have never forgotten. There can be many variatioins in a hybrid of the same name because the name comes from the breeding. Sweet Afton is a unique variety of the hybrid.
For a plant of BLC Mem. Helen Brown to be called "Sweet Afton" it has to be either a cutting of the original that was awarded or a clone of the original. This may very well be a BLC Mem Helen Brown but not the variety "Sweet Afton" that was given the award.

I still have the original 1977 1978 catalogue with the photo on the cover. I bought mine in 1978.

Would you like a cutting? You will have to find someone who has a quarintine and importing licence.

I have seen other photos of plants in the USA claiming to be BLC. Mem. Helen Brown "Sweet Afton" and they certainly are not.

Take another example LC Elizabeth Fulton. This hybrid came in avariety of colours but always the same shape. All have the same name.

    Regards,

    Hello Jordan,

    Some more education,

If you had a plant of BLC. Xanthette and crossed it with Lc Ann Follis since that crossing has already been registered in Sanders you would have to call all orchids from that pod BLC (now RLC) Mem. Helen Brown but none of them can be called "Sweet Afton".

    Regards,

Well, it is a gorgeous bloom, in either color...although I am partial to the greener shade. As for knowing why orchids decide to do what they do...I've just about decided that "catts" are a lot like "cats"...both mysterious little creatures who like to keep us just a wee bit off-balance.

    Hello Kathi,

    It is a lovely bloom.

But you did not get the message. BLC Mem. Helen Brown variety " Sweet Afton" as advised by its breeder opens green and turns yellow. And has different shape and colour distribution.

The messages I have posted was not about the colour or calling it BLC Mem Helen Brown it was about calling it "Sweet Afton" when obviously it was not.

    Regards,

    Bruce Ah Sing

No worries...I was replying to the other Bruce's post, having just skimmed the thread. But, thanks.

Awesome, Bruce. And the difference in color (2004 photo) is quite dramatic.
