Default C. Mem. Helen Brown 'Sweet Afton' AM/AOS

We have posted photos of this monster cattleya on here before. This time, the color seems much more yellow than the green I am accustomed to seeing. I wonder if it is because of the temperature or light? We have not removed the shade cloth from the top of the GH this year as we always do, so light levels are lower. Also, this catt is located in the cool end of the GH well away from the heaters. Hmmm? Anyway, she is still one of my favorites because of her size. The blooms are massive and heavy. Enjoy.

BD, your plant seems to have had a dose of something to increase the size and alter the color so much. This Catt was very popular here but I don't remember ever having seen with that amount of color or loose its shape so much or be so big as you describe. I found an old slide pic of the plant I had and the difference is remarkable. Mind you the slide color is not great now, so old.

I have been spraying pretty regularly with malathion, but I don't think that should have effected the color so much. Here is a link to the bloom on the same plant posted in 2004. The size of the plant and blooms is about the same. It is really the color that is different.

    Cattleya

In the 2nd photo above you can see my thumb and index finger of my hand holding the blooms up. The flowers got smashed where they were growing in between some other catts and were aimed downward so I held them up to photograph them.

    Cheers,
    BD

Wow, I would have assumed one or the other sets of photos were "off" in color, but you say that's real & I certainly see no reason for you to be pretending otherwise. Just one of these things that happen, I guess. I know some plants do respond to changes in pH in water and/or growing medium.

    Cheers,

    Rob

You can see my skin tone in the photo. This bloom appears more yellow (washed out) than green. This is the first time it has been this color. I am not sure what is going on. I do think that maybe the flowers are on their way out. I do not know how long it has been open, but maybe that is part of the mystery.

    Cheers,
    BD
