Default The face that launched a thousand ships: Cattleya labiata

Cattleya labiata is, to many, the quintessential orchid. First bloomed in the early 19th century by William Cattley, this flower became one of the catalysts for a feverish rush to find more orchids as beautiful and elegant as this one. Many other labiate Cattleyas have been described, all originally as varieties of this one species, but now elevated to species rank in their own right. This particular plant is a mericlone of the cultivar 'Sherwood Forest' that has received the highest award to date for this species. John Sherwood gave me this plant a few years back at the Tallahassee Orchid Show, which was certainly a show high point for me (thanks again, John!). My plant has just come into bloom, so I thought I'd record it in megapixels before anything unforeseen happened to these lovely flowers.
