Smile My Cutest Orchid - Dendrobium peguanum

This tiny Dendrobium peguanum from Thailand is my cutest plant. At only 4cm high it is already flowering. This miniature species is a lithophyte or epiphyte found on secondary shrub vegetation near streams in hot and humid areas at elevations around 300 to 400 meters.

I don't think I am growing this too well. My plant has bloomed consistently for the last three years but it never seems to err...grow. It seems I only get one new cane a year. Also my plant seems to be smaller than many I see in pictures. I keep it in very bright light in a small plastic basket with charcoal chips. This in turn I've placed in a small wooden slatted basket stuffed with sphagnum moss. This arrangement helps me control the humidity better in my air-conditioned bedroom. I reduce the water and fertilizer around late November until new growth emerges, usually around late March. I normally get flowers just before the start of the active growing season. I want one of those little fat plants with numerous canes and seven flowers on each inflorescence that I see in all those Thai pictures! Sigh.
