and today she continues to improve. Funny how the flowers start out greenish and pointy, becoming more buttery and round day by day...
I just love it!!
So do I, but some of the blooms have already folded--the ones in the middle of the spike, not at the top. Anyone know how long these blossoms should last? I'm so used to having phals bloom for 2 months! I kept it hydrated, but it was in sun (through the lanai screen) for several days...did I goof?
This year she has 5 (!!) count 'em...5 spikes! One new pseudobulb this year has grown through the slats and may or may not develop a spike of its own--depends on whether it is too squeezed to produce. We'll see... I will post a pic when the spikes start opening, maybe this week. I have no idea why she is so happy, as she just hangs out under the palm in the lanai all year. Must be just the right amount of light, food, and water. I hope this year's flowers last longer than last year's, but she is a delight.

I am still soooo jealous. I have mine under screen on the lanai. Not one single bud or bloom since I got it. What is wrong??? More light?? Less light????
This doesn't get a lot of light, because she hangs from a pygmy date, plus she is shaded from afternoon sun (esp. in summer) by the oak outside. She gets a lot of water (from me in spring, then from rain in summer) and a drier period from Nov 1 to about mid-Feb (the "Halloween-to-Valentine" dry time with no food). She seemed to be stimulated by the cold temps we had in Feb. I was in Austria then and could not bring the orchids in, obviously, so they stayed on the lanai into the 40s nights. However, I'm amazed that things were not really thrown off by the incredibly hot December we had. In summation, WHO KNOWS?? Beginner's luck, I think!
and here she is a week later... just starting to yellow up:
Very Nice! The spikes are a good length.
Beautifully grown and bloomed. Thanks for sharing
