Default Blc. Sanyang Ruby 'Sin May'

The plant already had buds when I bought it so I cant take credit for the flowers.
I got this literally "off the crate" as the employee at the store was unpacking the pallet of new orchids that they received. There were other people there too waiting alongside me.
It was relatively pricey compared to what I usually buy at that home improvement store ($27.00) but the plant was really big and healthy. I did not really care what the flowers would have looked like. I saw red buds and a very fat healthy plant so I said "Thats mine!"

The buds were much smaller when I bought them so I was quite surprised when the flowers grew this big. Each one is about 6 inches across.

It only started opening yesterday but it is starting to emit its fragrance. Very sweet, and heavy like fruit syrup.

Very nice one! I got one last year as a "bag baby". It is now about the same size as yours so I hope for buds soon! (What size pot is yours in?)

I have the 'Chi Ruby' clone. I haven't seen that one yet. Does Mei mean Ruby in some Asian language (Chinese or maybe Thai?) I have seen the 'Chi Mei' clone online.

I would have given $27 for that one as well!

    Hi Clint,

The inside pot is a 6-inch clay pot that is about 4 inches deep. The outside pot is my decorative ceramic pot that I use when I am displaying the plants inside the house.

I first put an inverted 6-inch pot on the bottom of the large pot so that the plant is elevated enough to be just above the lip of the larger pot.

Regarding the clones, the tag on my plant says 'Sin May' but Google shows so many variations of the name 'Chin Mei', 'Sin Mei', 'Chin May', 'Xin Mei' etc.
I'm not sure if they are actually different clones, or just misspelled variations of the same clone. It may be a Chinese-to-English pronunciation issue.

Does anyone speak Chinese? That's probably the only way we are going to find out. I wonder if Fren knows?

Gorgeous bloom! I think you did very well for 27 bucks. Even if that's a little higher than you like to go, I'd definitely say it was worth it. And I'm really cheap!

    Cheers,
    Rob

They would be same if translated back to Chinese... I am pretty sure it means "New Beauty", but can't be 100% unless I see the name in Chinese characters...

OK, I'm back--again! I just had to have another look at this stunning catt.

However, that's not why I'm posting again. I tried looking up your plant on OrchidWiz. I thought I'd see if this clone had ever been awarded, and then I would be able to tell you which of the variations in the spelling was the correct one. Unfortunately, it has not.

I did find one thing--the tag on your plant isn't quite right. It's not Sanyang Ruby. Rather, it's Sanyung Ruby. (It's also Rhynchosophrocattleya--Rsc--rather than Blc, because the darn taxonomists have been playing around with things again. However, to me that's less important than getting the grex name correct.)

The only awarded clone of Rsc (Blc) Sanyung Ruby is 'Kuang Lung'.

    Cheers,
    Rob

It's not Sanyang Ruby. Rather, it's Sanyung Ruby.
Again, it's due to translation difference. I guess OrchidWiz makes "Sanyung" as official name.
