Default Help Please. I don't know what to do with this one

Once again, I feel as dumb as a rock, but our landscaper just brought me the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Carrie said it's a Vanda (I tend to think everything is a Phal..

Anyhow, I'll accept that it's a Vanda, but it had no tag, so other than that, I don't have a clue. And as you can see, those roots are so long, I couldn't even get them all in, even though the photo is a panorama that's stitched together.

It's in a basket, and there's no medium, so how do I water it? I don't even have a hook to hang it from yet, but I'll get that done this weekend if it kills me. There's not enough light where it is now (my kitchen door). Will it be okay if I set it on a table for now, with the roots hanging down?

I'm going to have to really research this, but like I said, it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen (okay.... scratch that... my kids and grand kids were when they were born, but other than that...... )

Hi Anne!... This piece of beauty is HUGE!... I think you should spray the roots every day so the plant receives enough water... I don't think mounting would be a good idea since its usually done with smaller/younger plants... Perhaps you should start a potting mix and bury that root-mass in something (Leca, sphag, bark, bits of sponge and chunks of charcoal)...
Congrats on receiving this beautiful vanda... Here in Iran we only have phals... (dens, cyms and catts are only available as cut flowers)...

Hi Anne, You have a beautiful Vanda there. I grow mine outside in bright light to full sun. I water them with the hose or a mister daily sometimes twice if it is really hot. Have fun with your beauty it will bloom for you yearly maybe twice a year if it is happy.

Thank you Mohsen. I think you're probably right about spraying the roots every day. I'm also going to research all I can find on Vandas.

Molly, thank you. Putting it outside is out of the question. Someone would walk off with it for sure.

When you mist yours, do you just do the roots, or the flowers too?

Right now I have it hanging from my curtain rod (it's big, but it's not heavy), but I don't think it will get enough light that way to keep it happy. A few inches lower down would be better I think, so I'll see if I can get someone to rig up a plant hanger for me. I've got concrete walls, so hanging anything becomes a big problem.

Right now, I have it in an east facing window that gets bright light all day, and some sun in the morning. Do you think it would do better with a southern exposure? If so, I'll move it out to the Florida room.

Thanks again for your help and advice.

AHHHH!! That is spectacular!! Give me your landscapers phone number NOW please!!

NO potting mix for this one, it needs to stay in the basket!! water the roots daily, no big deal, take it to the sink! Its easy. it likes a lot of light, but don't burn it - idk where it was before, but its gorgeous. I am way envious. Just read about vandas, you'll be fine, don't over think it ok?? Be happy, that is SO beautiful!!! Your florida room might be better, but dont let those leaves burn, they are strappy and will burn quick. Maybe keep a fan on it so the leaves dont burn? More light = better blooming.

Never get flowers wet...that counts for all flowers. That leads to fungus.

I wish someone would give me something like that, those colours are better than anything I have.I have twenty Vandas and I water every day sometimes twice in the summer, when it is a bit colder I try to mist each day, also they like plenty of fresh air so when the weather is good hang them under a tree.

I knew I could count on you guys for help. Thank you so much.

Becky, when you do the sink watering, about how long do you water them? My kitchen sink is nice and big, so that should work out well. Now I just need to work out something so it gets loads of light.

Anne when you water it with a mister I suggest a dilute fertilizer solution these guys are heavy feeders and like to have something other than water
