Default Den. Spring Dream 'Apollon' and Bletilla striata

Not the best picture . . . both of these bloomed rather unphotogenically this year. So I didn't bother to take nice pics.

I've just tried crossing (both directions) this Bletilla with the Calanthe vestita var. fournerii posted over in the "other genera" forum.

The Bletilla striata looks like an iris almost. I like the purple color. What type of flower can you expect with a cross from these two very different looking blooms?
    Cheers!

Um . . . you all haven't seen a Bletilla striata? Otherwise known as a Chinese Ground Orchid? They're hardy to zone 5 or 6, depending on who you listen to. You can find them for $5 per 2 or 3, often with companies that sell bulbs. Small, short lived flowers which don't open completely, but cute, very easy, and fast growing.

As far as the cross goes . . . hard to say what the blooms would look like. Bletilla has only been crossed with Calopogon and Pleione, and I haven't seen the outcome of either of those crosses. And really, it's not all that likely that the cross will take at all. BTW, Calanthe has been crossed only with Phaius.

I think I'll also try to cross both the Calanthe and Bletilla with the Spathoglottis. Also unlikely.

Um, nope! Don't think so - just went in a different direction for my collection, so perhaps I've not been paying full attention? Very pretty though, both of them!

You know, Heather, now that I'm thinking about it, it makes sense that you wouldn't be familiar with them since you live too far north to grow them outside.

    Anyhow. They're fun little guys.
