    Default Vanda

    Hi Everyone:

Can someone advise me, please, on the best potting medium for the Sun and Shade vanda?

I have about six but I don't think I am caring for them properly. Three are in a wooden basket without medium and their roots are hanging at least a foot down. The others don't really have roots yet so, I want to pot them.

    Thanks,
    Dail

Dail, vandas are doing best bare roots. Just make sure you water them every morning (shower the roots). My vandas are in baskets (same as yours) and are doing good. Give them lots of light and they'll be happy! I do have some babies laying over bark but that is until they heve good roots to go in baskets.

Yep -- as a general rule vandas do not like their roots to be potted. Here is a quick shot of mine. The trick is to keep the humidity around them high and to water them down--I do it daily.

As you can see -- I have them in cedar or teak baskets, and some are just in plastic baskets, with no media of any kind. Truly, this is just how they grow.

    Thanks, Margo.

Mine would looks just like yours, (except yours look much healthier). One of the vandas which is not yet potted seemed to be dying so I took it to lan established plant shop. The resident expert told me it was in that condition because I was growing the plant without medium.

I have had vandas for at least three years and I prior to "The Expert" I was told to grow these plants "bare root." Seeing your results has removed any doubt from my mind that the vandas should be "bare root." Thanks a million.

When my orchids "grow up" I want them to be just like yours.
    Thanks for the encouragement.

Dail, in general Vandas will grow better when bare root, but in your case when the plant has no roots and is not in best health, it would be best to put it in a smaller basket with some media like large charcoal chunks and coconut husk chips. Once it has established a good root system, then it go bare root again. To make your vandas root, you need constant humidity now in summer. It will be very difficult to achieve it if they are bare root (Misting every two hours). So medium like charcoal and cocohusk chips will be useful. I have rooted many mokara and vanda cuttings in this way.
