Are you serious? From Manado, you have to pass by the Mindanao Deep (Trench), which is the second deepest spot on earth, after the Marianas Trench.
Please don't mind the more than 10 species of sharks that would love to chew on you.

I think you can save time by flying in from Manado to Davao and thence to Manila.

In short, I don't know. I don't think someone has ever swum the distance. I don't swim.

I wonder if it still exists in Luzon, due to volcanic eruptions, or mauybe collecting in the past ?
As to V sanderiana , the common belief is that too was collected out ; but the Phillipines are so little known and understood here in Western Europe. Many orchid countries seem easily accessible - Thailand and South East Asia is the easiest for us, but central and South America are not too hard - but the Phillipines - the normal travel agent doesn't even know where they are !

Yes it still does exist in Luzon but in very inaccessible habitats and the locations are usually kept secret to prevent poachers from harvesting them.

The same is true for the V. Sanderanas in Mindanao. I think there may be still some in the wild but these could be located so deep in the rebel-infested forest so no one really knows and would even dare go in to. (Come to think of it the presence of the rebels in indirectly conserve and prevent orchid poaching perhaps ...)

Perhaps the rebels are secret orchid growers....

p.s but it's nice to see it, and I never know, I could come across a piece at one of the big shows such as the European Orchid Congress ( at Budapest, Hungary next year ) , or perhaps a flask somewhere. I'll certainly keep it in the back of my mind.

    Hi Nelson,

In my opinion Vanda javierae is the most beautiful orchid species from the Philippines. It is a very easy grower here in Sydney. This species is also becoming more readily available because I have made sibling crosses and within a year or so flasks should be available.

    All the best,

    Jim Cootes
