    Question 2 different Cattleyas

Here photos of 2 nice Cattleyas, very fragrant and the blossoms measure about 4 inches+ in diameter. As so common in Thailand, sellers never mark or
know the name of their orchids...If anyone can identify either of these 2 cattleyas I would be very appreciative. Many thanks in advance!

    Cheers, Michael

both are beauties Michael. I particularly love the white one. There are too many whites with yellow in the throat to make a guess but I suspect there is C. Bob Betts and/or C Bow Bells in it's background.

I know how it is with Thai orchid vendors unless you go to an established nursery. It's the same here in Malaysia.I don't know if this will help. If it is a Thai hybrid then it could be Blc Pornthip. I'm posting a pic of my Pornthip 'Jac' when it is fully bloomed - by this I mean the flower becomes fuller as opposed to the early stage when it looks almost like yours i.e less round. As to the lavender one, sorry.Loks good any way.

Lovely floofies ! Having done a lot of research on white cattleyas lately, I agree with Ron. I think it could be C. Queen sirkhit as it is a very common clone in Thailand. C. pornthip (Never search this name when using a computer at work, you get very different results than expected and the consequences can be very very embarrassing) anyways coming back to it, it is much more fuller and the tepals are more blunt and not crispy sharp.

Thank you, I had also thought about C. Queen Sirikit, but really wasn't sure. Amey, how come you are knowledgeable about clones and orchids in Thailand, have you been here?
How about India, is the rage of orchids offered there vast? (I have been to Rajasthan and loved it as well as the cuisine!!!)

    Cheers, Michael

If that lavendar one was a bit lighter in color, I would say Donna Kimura 'Paradise Tami'. Unfortunatly, it probably isn't correct.

Sorry guys Pornthip is not Blc but Lc Pornthip. Just checked the tag this morning. Could be a Queen Sirikit but the Queen Sirikit I have var 'Diamond Crown', which I acquired in1966[not blooming at the moment] has a slightly different shape being longer vertically rather than laterally like Michael's and the yellow pattern in the throat is more like Pornthip. Any way in Thailand when you are in doubt about the name of a white cattelya, just say ' Queen Sirikit' and you are most probably right because there are a few clones around, though it is acknowledged that 'Diamond Crown' is the best clone having been awarded 2 AMs.

*Amey; a thousand pardons for any embarassment caused! Have you tried 'Miss Thailand'?

I don't have much knowledge, whatever I know is from surfing the websites of many Thai orchid growers, most of them offer C. queen sirkhit and Lc. Pornthip. Yes, I have been to Thailand for a vacation in 2005, it was the time I had just started collecting orchids I got some really beautiful phals and mokaras, but all NOIDs. I plan to visit again sometime in 2010 this time strictly to buy orchids from some reputed nurseries.
Sadly the orchid scene in India is not very good. Most orchids produced in India are Sonia dendrobiums and mokaras produced for the cut flower industry. Most orchids are imported from Thailand and that too not in my state but the south Indian states of Kerala and Karnataka.
Rajasthan is a very nice place rich with tradition and ancient architecture. Good that you loved the food, but I know Thai cuisine is also spicy so no worries
