    Default Blc. Meditation 'Lahaina Larry'

This is another one of those old (mid 70s) Cattleya crosses that I've got a collection of. They'll put out three or four blooms per growth, and you have to be careful to keep them tied after the flowers open or the weight of them can bend / break the PB they're growing from.

Larry did a good job on this cultivar! MUCHO FRILLY!!!

Everyone needs a nice, big white or semi-alba in their collection. I'm assuming, like many whites, it has a nice fragrance!?

    Good growing, Louis!

Thanks, you guys! Yes, the fragrance is pretty amazing. When the light hits those flowers, the whole greenhouse gets perfumed with the scent.

Very pretty, Louis. So, things from the '70s are already "old?"

Aw...in Louis' defense, I remember some of the color combos used in homes during the 70's. Bathrooms particularly. They are definitely old (and harsh!) That being said, there are certainly things even from the 60's that are still young and wonderful! (Although they have their old moments...)

...and let's not forget 70s wallpaper!

Or the first digital watches--remember those? Ungainly things with little red, glowing numbers?

The 70s pretty much saw the demise of the big Catts as corsage orchids, but they're making a comeback (as are long hair and bell-bottoms on guys, if the students at Bruce's college are any indication--everywhere you look, it's either Sonny Bono or Greg Brady, and if you've ever heard of the Scissor Sisters, making a huge splash here in the US now, Disco ain't far behind...).

The past 30 years have seen the "big" bred out of Cattleyas, (or the "small" bred into them, however you want to look at it), transforming them now into minicatts that a lot more people can grow since they don't need anywhere near the light to get them to bloom.

There was a point to all this, but I just came back in and the point seems to have evaporated. I'll just go tend some plants and put on a nice record, maybe "Night Fever" from the Bee-Gees--or better yet, I think I've got Barry Manilow on 8-track....
