    Default Bc. Pastoral 'Innocence' PHOTOS

Awarded its AM/AOS in 1979, Bc. Pastoral 'Innocence' is a famous cultivar that deserves its status as one of the "classic" white cattleyas. It reliably produces large, 6-7" flowers that are almost pure alba, except for a slightly reddish tinge to the petals and a small distinctive "pencil" of magenta on the lip. The Brassavola (Rhyncholaelia) digbyana influence is readily apparent in the large, exquisitely fimbriated lip, and contributes towards a more delicate fragrance. Bc. Pastoral is an easy grower under standard cattleya conditions: very strong light, a well-draining medium, and plenty of water during periods of active growth.

Gorgeous plant, Jason! Does it have any scent, and if so what time of day? (I'm wondering if it picked up the digbyana's nighttime lime scent.)

The name is great, too! Louis, you couldn't get near this one in your current state of sinful living!

Sue, I think Julie meant my own personal state of being, a state of clearly NON-pastoral NON-innocence.... (We've been going back and forth about "sin" in PMs...)

Jason, you're right. If it didn't have that vertical magenta stripe on the lip, it would be a dead ringer for Meditation. Noticed that both share the same pod parent, Bc Deese; two more generations back, and there's the digbyana. Gorgeous pic, as always. I really need to learn to do better with flash--are you bouncing it or aiming it directly?

I haven't been around during the days (which really irritates me when I have things fragrant during the day), but there's at most a soft nighttime scent. I expect to have more fragrance during the day though. No lemony digby scent, although it really doesn't have all that much digby in it (despite its dominance towards the lip shape). not like Ports of Paradise, at least. but who knows what it smells like during the day. I'll get back to you if I find out.

So far the scent really pales in comparison to the mossiae, which is a really strong classic catt scent.

Louis, my camera unfortunately doesn't take good pictures when I turn the flash off, although I have taken to blocking part of the flashbulb with a finger to try to reduce the glare. I stick a piece of black velvet behind the flowers and aim directly at them.

Finally sniffed it during the day. Not the classic strong cattleya floral fragrance, but considerably lighter, and hard to pin a description of. I can't detect the lemony fragrance of digby, although it might be hidden in there somewhere.

It was pointed out to me that I neglected to remove the sheaths prior to taking a picture...although I'm sure there are those out there who grow catts for the sheaths...
