Hello and welcome. Cxcanh whose plant is being shown lives in Hanoi, where they have very hot and wet summers and a very cool and dry winter. It is this dry and cool winter that stimulates the dendrobium to bloom. Where I live, we have a dry winter and nowhere as cool as in Hanoi and so they produce very good vegetative growth but unfortunately no flowers. If you could replicate the conditions as found in its natural home., 3 months of cool temp 10 - 15 C with no watering then you would have no problem blooming it.

Hello catttan. Thank you for your reply. I must say that here in southern California (U.S.A), I am able to give it the conditions it needs when it comes to water and temperature. Unfortunately, I feel that when it comes to the growing medium - I'm at a loss. I have a Den. Hainanense which has bloomed every year since I bought it, and Im under the assumption that the two need similar growing conditions. I once read an article saying that Den. Hancockii was a ground dwelling orchid, and it made me wonder if the reason my orchid wasn't doing well was because of the growing medium. For this reason, I wanted to ask around to see what growing medium would be best for this orchid. On one side, I'm loving this orchid because it's challenging me. On the other side, I'm getting frustrated, because I want to see it thrive and not just barely survive. Thanks for taking the time to reply and for your ideas.

Islandboi, the general rule of tumb for growing any Dendrobium in pot is 'pot bound'. Don't look at the size of the plants, rather the roots mass. All my dendrobium are in 4" pot or mounted, except giant ones like pulchellum, gibsonii, etc. All pot are in clay or plastic with size holes. I suggest you might want to take it out and transfer it into 4" clay pot w a fresh mix. D. hancockii produce not a lot of roots so i'm very careful about watering and the mix. And their roots are big and fat for dendrobium specie, resemble more like vanda roots.
