This is a discussion on Dendrobium bursigerum, philippines within the Cattleyas, Vandas, Dendrobiums IN BLOOM forums, part of the Orchid Photography category; hi folks, this dendrobium is endemic to the philippines and often confused with d. secundum. ...
this dendrobium is endemic to the philippines and often confused with d. secundum.
it has a fruity fragrance.
d. secundum has much bigger blooms, open a bit wider and they point only in 1 direction, hence the name "secund".
i just learned it from jim cootes, so thanks for that!
Very nice, Ron.
Lovely color!! What a showy plant.
thanks for sharing this ron... i have a D. secundum, blooms are similar to yours so it might
not be secundum at all.... i will take a closer look when it blooms.
Dendrobium secundum is a native of Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, etc., and in over 30 years of studying orchids of the Philippines, both in nature and herbaria, I have never seen a D. secundum there.
The other feature of D. bursigerum is that the blooms are all around the inflorescence. In D. secundum the blooms all face forward, or in one direction.
I sent Ron a picture of D. secundum yesterday, when we were discussing these species, so maybe Ron could place it here so that people can see the differences.
Thank you guys for the birthdays wishes too.
