to mount the dendrobiums and others, does one have to use cork bark or can any tree wood be used. i have several i'd like to mount but find the cork bark rather expensive here.

I have them mounted on cork, lilac, apple, grape, tree fern (also rather expensive), and driftwood. Driftwood must be of the fresh water variety and free from pollution. Three years ago I collected a large basket of driftwood from the Lake Erie shoreline in Southern Ontario. I used it to mount 5-6 plants and for a while they did well but all started to deteriorate after 6-8 months and I had no idea why. I have a very weak sense of smell so it never clicked in when my wife complained about smelling gasoline in the basement where the unused pieces were being stored. That was in a large plastic bag and when I opened the bag to mount more plants the smell was overwhelming even for me. I would think beach driftwood floats around for a minimum of 100 years to become what it is. Probably floats through the same number of oil slicks during that time. Some species can be mounted on stone or fired clay as well. You do have to keep in mind that you will have to water much more frequently.
