    Default Lost ID Catt

This is one of the beauties I picked up at the orchid club sale last weekend. Somewhere during the selection process, we lost its tag and also damaged the growth with the next sheath. Fortunately, they had very few cattleyas at the sale (like, 5 total in 250 blooming orchids), so they were going to try to identify it with the vendor they got it from. The club president is not a catt. fan--he finds them hard to grow, although he is a wizard with vandas in his greenhouse in South Dakota (go figure?). Anyway, even though it is currently NOId, and somewhat larger than my minis, I couldn't pass up its gorgeous bronzy color. It also much more mature than most of mine and forcing its 4 in square pot into a 5 inch round size, so I figured it would be a good opportunity to practice dividing.

If anyone would like to hazard a guess, it is bifolate. The tallest growth is about 11 inches from the top of the pot and the spike an inch taller. It had a cluster of 9 blooms about 1.5 inches wide.

    Default UPDATE! Partial tag found!

It's repotting day today and even though it is still in bloom, this one made the list because it is way too tippy, even in an extra pot. I was thrilled to discover half a tag wedged down in there, but as soon as I read it I knew the mystery was still not solved.

    Ctna. Why Not

Clearly, this one is not that gorgeous rounded red with yellow throat that is on my want list. So the rest of the tag must have been the other parent. After googling, I found a World Orchid Conference article on Broughtonias that discusses several of the more popular Ctna. Why Not crosses (without photos, of course).

The tag does not have a close-parenthesis, so I'm guessing it was not a named cross. The blooms have faded to sunset shades--orange and gossamer rose. Does anyone have any ideas with this new info?

If it is not a named cross, and you have only one parent, not sure how you'd ever know.

I did see one that reminded me of it...Wny Not x LC Gold Digger.

Maybe Guaricattonia Lawless Gloriana (Cattlianthe Gold Digger x Guaritonia Why Not)

It might be a little different, but very nearly the same. Here is a photo:

Could be Claudehamiltonara (Otaara) Hidden Gold (Grt. Why Not x Bc. Richard Mueller). The color palette, size and form are about right, and this cross is known for color change as the flower ages, as are many Richard Mueller crosses.

I would also say: Ottara Hidden Gold because I have one! If it changes from coral to yellow or gold after about a week it means BINGO!

    Cheers, Michael
