This is the second time this orchid blooms this year (last time was February).
It seems to like Phuket as we have similar climatic conditions as it's home, Hawaii.

    Enjoy, Michael

Is the quality of the blue variable according to light ? I assume it must be - since there is a similar relationshipo in other genera ; a pale ble Ascocenda I had used to be a dirty grey colour flowering after a dull English winter , and its quite well know in the paph world - conversely ! that the lower the light the better the colour and size of flower, but the less frequent the flowers come .

Hi Geoff ! In blue cattleyas its all about the internal pH in the petal cells. Light and other cultural regimen effect this pH balance giving various hues.

This one is part of my wishlist. It's difficult to find this kind of catt with purple color here.

Light definitely has a great influence on the colour of the bloom. I have noticed that the colours of most blooms are more intense and vibrant in our highlands than in the lowlands in the same plants. Here I would suspect the plants have a 'defence mechanism' to filter out the higher amount of UV light that occurs in the highlands. Even the leaves of some plants have a definite reddish tinge to the leaves that is absent in the lowlands. The quality of the light, the amount and the length of time that the plant is exposed to the light all play a part in determining the colour of the flowers. The other factors, I think, are fertilisers and even watering. These are based entirely on my own observations.

My Lc Blue Boy has improved its colour since I switched fertiliser and allow more light into my orchid house. Ditto the vandaceous.

Very interesting about the converse effect of light on paphs, Geoff.

Stunning. I love the blooms, but love the display and where you have this orchid hanging. So pretty. Nice going!

    Cheers,

Many paphs do grow on the floor of the forest ; I have been fortunate enough to see about 5 of the species in the genuine wild , 4 of which were on the ground ( and one was in the first fork of a tree , maybe 30-40 feet up) and my theory is that in the low light flowers need to be brighter, and flowers bigger, to catch the eye of the pollinator . On my last trips I went around wih a light meter as well as other instruments, and Paph cocolor and bellatulum were growing in a light of only a few hundred FC ( about 4K Lux), although that was far brighter thanplaces were other orchids were flowering, e.g. Calanthe triplicata in about 5FC , which we only half jokingly said was not bright enough to read a newspaper.
