    Default Vanda Kasem's Delight

and for a cultivar name, how about "And Geoff's too"...
Not large, a good 9cm, but these are UK winter blooms , which I don't expect to be as good, or as many on the spike, as summer blooms. But this is a young plant , 2nd time of flowering, so should improve.
I have been getting as many as 11 or 12 flowers on the best Vanda spikes this year , which is more than pretty good for UK - but that's on plants I have had for 5 or more years . Five is the count on this one.
It's a much better colour than any of the half a dozen or so illustrated on Orchidwiz ,if I doo say so myself, being less than modest , but it is quite a variable cross - I have others with the same name tag which are pink rather than purple.

Beautiful, intense purple/blue color. You obviously take great care with your orchids. Vandas are a favorite of mine.

I think it cost me US$6 in Thailand - visiting the nursery current price is not much more if you go and fetch them ! I chose my plants in flower - my CITES permit just said 40 Vanda hybrids , or to be precise it said one Vanda hybrid, giving me freedom to pick and choose. I had 40 permits ( plus the same for Dendrobiums and the same for Cattleyas , and 5 copies of each permit, all different colours, intended for different Government snoopers, all folded zig-zag computer print-out fashion , all say A4 size ( If you don't do International Paper sizes, say 12 inch x 10 inch). This made a block of paper approaching 2 inches thick. My plants got into two of the nursery standard big boxes ( two trolleys at the airport, one pushed the other pulled ) - all my scientific kit and spare sox in a large back-pack. Went through the red channel " Something to declare" at the home airport - CITES in hand .... they had all gone to lunch... so I walked through , never got stopped, ended up putting the paperwork in the recycling skip.
    So much for bureaucracy.
But if you want Vandas , that's what I recommend . BTW the price for good Vandas in UK now ? I bought Ascda Tubtim Velvet in August, a meristem which I expect you know. Lovely plant, about 10 pairs of leaves very broad and each leaf over 12 inches long, now with two spikes sand a few flowers open - look to be about 4 inches or more across. Unforunately some buds on both spikes have blasted ( so I'll wait for the next flowering to dazzle you - hopefully) which may be because the spikes had grown too near the glass, and we have had a spell of very cold weather , down to minus 5 in the garden - Even if the inside of the greenhouse stays above 15, it has maybe been down to 10 or below next to the glass. Whatever ; the plant cost me US$50 ( ú30 sterling). I can't afford to buy many at that price !

Thailand really is the home of the vandas and ascocendas., isn't it ? Oh and dendrobes as well. I'm very lucky to live just across the southern border of Thailand and pay Thai 'prices' for my orchids. Large blooming vandas with 8-12 pairs of leaves cost me RM 35 - 40 and those with 5 - 8 pairs of leaves RM 20 - 25.( US$1 = RM3 ). And I don't have to bother with all the paperwork and bureaucracy. The vendor brings the plants every Friday to the Farmers' Market. I don't ask her how she gets them across and she doesn't tell me. OH yes, the blooming dendrobes are RM8.
