I find it better than scouring. But try it in summer when the humidity and temperatures are high, I am sure it will produce aerial roots then.
I have copied this into my orchid reminders page . Thanks for the suggestion - quite new to me !

Yes, it is a method used for air layering very small bonsai branches, where scouring to the correct depth is very difficult, you either over scour killing the branch or you under scour in which case there is no restriction for the sap flow and hence no roots. With the copper wire you never actually make an open wound on the plant. Twist it wait for 2-3 weeks, if it doesnt work, give few more twists and wait, then it should work.

Oh, I almost missed this one. I love it Geoff! I bet it just needs more moisture in the air to produce those roots.

    Cheers,

At one time I had one of those fans with hollow blades fed with water which kept humidity high - but I moved house, moved a couple of hundred miles, and the water was different, and deposited lime scale on the leaves. I tried a water softener - the salt regeneration kind, but that seemed to lead to black spots on the leaves instead. I scrapped the lot a year or so ago, and my foliage is much cleaner - although with Vandas etc, the marks are there to see for the next 10 years.... with a big greenhouse like mine, and with daily spraying on the mounted plants, I think no extra humidification is necessary in England - but other places will be different, no doubt. Horses for Courses, as we say.

It is a beauty but I can see your point. I too have a couple of hard to manage vanda types - but I love them just the same. Stunning displays!
