Cool Bc. Hoku Gem 'Freckles' and its color shift

Love this tiny bloom and how the color shifts to a deep red-orange over time. I really like seeing it with new blooms and older blooms on the plant at the same time. Makes an interesting display. This orchid used to be called a Potinara but the name was changed to Brassocattleya.

I'm surprised it shifts from yellow to red -- I thought they all shifted from red to yellow. My 'Super spots' just finished blooming.

    Don't you love these guys?!

I am pretty sure ours starts off bright yellow with faint red spots that transform into a deep orange red bloom with dark brown-red spots like you see in the photos. Really a beautiful transformation. Since both colors are on the bloom spikes right now, I will have to keep an eye on it and see what we end up with. You have got me second-guessing which way it shifts. hahah... I could have it completely backwards...

    Cheers,
    BD

Awesome ! The colour change is all due to pH shifts in the cells and can be any way around based on the pigment. The cytoplasm of most cells is neutral to basic, when the senescence starts, the cytoplasmic environment starts getting acidic, and thats what causes the colour change. A simple version of this would the red cabbage juice or turmeric, add an alkaline substance like soap or baking soda and the turmeric will turn red, now add a bit of vinegar or lemon juice (acid) and it will again turn yellow.

What Amey said Seriously, that is interesting! Bruce, your orchid looks like such a great display. I love orchids (and other blooms) that change color as they age. Do you have a Confederate Rose perhaps?

No, but I do have several roses. I don't know if I have heard of a Confederate Rose but will google it asap. I guess I need one hahaha...

I am so glad Amey is here. I love the way he can explain things and how he freely shares his knowledge.

    Cheers,
