    Default Vanda Sunray

If I can manage to keep the present flowers good - and there is still one bud to open and the top flowers have a long way to go in expanding to full size - maybe 2 -3 weeks ? and if I can manage to get all the buds on the second spike open and up to full size - another 4 weeks ? that will make about 17 flowers, on the day of my Orchid Society's Spring Show.... and as my Dad used to say, "if ifs and ands make pots and pans, then all the whole world would be tinkers"....or in modern parlance - I wish....

A nice Hybrid - Sunray. I have three of them, all very similar, maybe they are meristems anyway. Flowers not the largest, but a decent 11 cm - 4 and a half inches or more. easy and frequent flowerer , usually twice per year, and the old spikes seen in the pic confirm my recollection. However, has not double-spiked often, as also seen in the pic. Quite a lot of my Vandas are ( double-spiking) at the moment - a good growing year last year. I reckon.

Some (most) of my pics are with a Nikon D300 using a very old Micro-Nikkor
60 mm lens ( capable of giving 1:1 on 35mm film and used on the digital camera maybe even more than life-size). When I used it as a holiday camera I put on the Nikkor 18-200 zoom , which at maximum zoom focuses down to about 50cm which covers an area say 5 or 6 inches wide - so this is quite good for larger flowers, and I think I used that for these Vanda shots. I often use the built-in camera flash, but sometimes use a larger flash gun on a wander lead held at the side of the camera and above it, so that the shadows cast by the flowers are not distracting.
Nowadays I find the Nikon kit too heavy to cart around on holiday, so use a super-zoom Fuji , which has a macro facility, but I find that pretty useless for real close-ups, whatever the camera makers publicity says.
