Smile Dendrobium Thongchai Gold 'Double Delight'

Hi Everybody! Its nice to have something to post. This Dendrobium started blooming about 12 days ago. Eleven blooms, but the first one to open has already faded. Does anyone know how long the blooms on this orchid are supposed to last? Does it bloom more than once a year? As you can tell, this is its first spike/flowers under my care. AL

Can't answer any of your questions, but I love the colors!
Do the blooms stay like this, or open up more as they mature?

They open a little more as they mature, but still a bit on the tight side. Thanks for your nice words Kathi. AL

Hi Betty.... Thanks for your complimentary response. You know I have not really checked it out for fragrance, or at least not up real close. Will check it out and let you know if its Smell Test positive.......AL

Dendrobiums of the type you've bought, the flowers usually last a couple months. How often are you watering? This plant should be watered every 4 or 5 days and needs more sunlight than the normal phals. If your flowers are failing so quickly I would check the roots first, look around to see if there are bugs....with buds still unopened there must be something wrong. I might suggest you take it back and trade it for a healthy one maybe.

I thank you for your response and cultural information. I have been watering it every 3 to 4 days as being in lava rock, I understood you needed to water a little more often. Sun light is 2000 to 2500 foot candle lights according to my light meter. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I thought this was enough light for a Dendrobium No sign of bugs. I will keep a eye out. I will go to every 4 or 5 days watering. Just checked the roots and they are numerous, long and healthy. I posted (not here) that the first bloom to open looked upside down to me. Maybe it was a dude to begin with. Thanks again. AL

The flowers of Thongchai Gold are very long-lasting. The "Double Delight" thing intrigues me . If you could take another picture especially of the lip when the flower is fully open it would help to confirm whether the lip is split into two and thus the "Double Delight" (?). If the lip is split in two the it could be an 'induced' mutation type and weird things can be expected.

Al, what a great looking dendrobium! I love the fuchsia lip with the green blooms. Congratulations on your first blooming of it. I am glad to read in Yew Sung's post that the blooms are long lasting. What a beautiful display!!

    Cheers,
    BD
