Beautiful plant and the flowers are great - intense. I had never thought of hanging a S/H. I love growing in them - great luck so far. I use food containers but you are right about the fact they can get tipsy. Sitting the whole container in a clay pot works sometimes too to keep them steady. I am going to have to try the hanging. I assume you bring them down to add the water since they overflow some or you are really good at adding just the right amount of water!

Geoff....I water every 3 to 4 days, no drying off. Once a month, I feed with a liqiid "grow" fertilizer.(1 Tsp. per gallon of city water monthly). I put all of my new plants in SH as soon as I get them, unless the are in bud. I have had pretty good sucess with the more mature plants. Most of my losses are with younger seedlings. The majority of my plants are Catts and Phals. I have about 20 Vanda types, in wood baskets, some with coarse bark, and some with clay pellets as a medium. These get misted for an hour every morning, and fed monthly with the same mix from a spray bottle. I hope this helps ......

Geoff, I maintain the same water level year round. I water every 3 to 4 days, (with city tap water). Every 4/th watering is with a mix of 1 Tsp. of a "grow" liqiud fert mixed with each gallon of water. I usually put all of my new plants in SH right away, unless they are in bud, or not in top shape.I have about 20 Vanda types, in wood baskets, some with bark, some with clay pellets. They get misted each morning for an hour or more, and fed the same mix, from a spray bottle.

Don, No, I don't bring them down. The Catts. underneath just get a little wetter ......I am careful with the Phals, so they don't get dripped on . I started hanging them, because I was running out of shelf space.( A 5' X 24' space in a screened in lanai).

Thanks John, I'll have another go with catts in S/H. Your idea if individual jars is one I shall copy - previously, and elsewhere ( i.e. other orchids in S/H) I use shallow tanks or deep trays, each holding 20-20 plants, depending on size of pots.

Heres a snap of my plant ( actually one of two since I divided last year) growing conventionally, not S/H, with four flowers. I suspect my plant does not look as good as the one which started this thread although my four flowers are pretty nice IMHO.

Both of these are marvelous and maybe some day I will use S/H culture once I get more comfortable with the orchids I have. I notice that both plants look absolutely blemish free. If so I don't quite know how you folks do it. My orchids are handsome, but certainly not flawless. AL
