    Very nice colors John. Congratulations.
Andrew in the case of Cattleyas I think they are simply referred to as 'splash petals'

Like tropical fruit cocktail in a bloom. Is it fragrant?

Beautiful, bright flowers and it sounds like they have bloomed as if on schedule! Tami, I like your use of imagination. If you don't mind me saying so, that was a neat commentary. AL

    Peloric Orchids
Andrew, peloric means anything irregular, the general term that simply describes this irregularity would be splash petal, but scientifically speaking it is called a homeotic mutant, one organ type has changed into another, in this flower the organs or parts which should have normally developed into petals, have developed into labellum like organ. This is caused by interaction of genes that model the flower.

Thesaurus is telling "regularity of structure occurring abnormally in flowers normally irregular"
An abnormality is, if an Orchid has the color pattern of the lip on the petals.
The regularity is, that this flower has now 3 equal petals and 3 equal sepals.
Now somebody else has to explain where the normally irregular kicks in.
Hope this helps to give you an idea.
