Size: 111.1 KBAnother lesson in breeding too - how to make an easy flowering reliable good quality orchid ; cross an excellent large 4n hybrid back to the 2n species ( coerulea). Works with Cymbidiums too, and no doubt woith lots of other things - probably the first lesson I was taught, in orchid breeding - way back - not that I have actually done this very often, but I'm not an orchid professional ; still it taught me how to read the label, and what to expect. Thanks to all those chaps who shared their knowledge so freely when I was a young novice... all growing orchids of perfection in another place, these many years, no doubt ! ( or maybe when you are young, everyone over 50 is incredibly ancient - still they would be over a hundred by now even if they were only 50 at the time ).

These hybrids made this way are usually triploid and "therefore" sterile. So the plant uses its energy in producing good flowers often. Of course there is a loss of size, but I don't want them all to be huge . These are say 11 cm at most.

You are so right Geoff. In vandas especially the 3n's especially have been exceptional eg V Tan Chay Yan and V Nellie Morley.

I cannot see the pictures, nonetheless I enjoyed all the info you provided. Backcrossing is also a good way of introducing the hybrid vigour from the offspring and reduce the defects from the parents.

I grow all my orchids in the same house ; winter minimum night temperature is in the range 13-17 depending on how near the glass , in summer it stays warmer than that. Winter minimum day temperature if there is no sun and its cold outside is maybe 19, in summer much warmer than that. When its sunny all day, with shade on and vents wide open, the door wide open too, I hope to keep it down to 30, but it often goes higher - over 40 and growths get damaged, plants die....
