Cool Dendrobium loddigesii in a basket

Got this dendrobium orchid from my friend Gin in trade several years ago. It finally decided to start growing last year and this year it is looking so pretty. Here is the first opening bloom.

Beautiful, Bruce! How do you care for yours? I see yours still has lots of leaves. I have one I got last year, and all four canes lost all the leaves over the winter.

For a long time mine looked terrible. It had very few leaves and only would bloom with maybe three blooms -if that. Then, I moved it to the cool end of the greenhouse. It also gets lots more humidity in its new location just in front of the koolcell cooling panel. I think that made the difference. Other than that, I water it twice a week during the warm months and once a week to once every 10 or 12 days during the cold months. It gets fertilizer every other time it is watered. That is it. It grows in a basket. I did add a little charcoal and seedling bark into the basket, but mostly for the orchid to have something on all the roots growing in there.

    Cheers,
    BD

Oops. I thought this one was supposed to have a dry rest in the winter. I may have let mine get too dry. Thanks, Bruce!

    Hi Bruce,

    - Your plant seems very healthy
    - I bought a Dendrobium loddigesii two years ago.
    - It grows abundantly, but refuses to flower.
    - Last winter, I put it outside for about a month reducing watering to once per week but despite this treatment, it refused to bloom this year again.
    - It needs probably a more aggressive dry rest during next winter?
    - I will try this next winter ...

Nice Bruce, mine like Daniel refused to bloom what I had done I brought this plant into my office with a constant temperature of 18 degree Celsius for 4 weeks than exposed to normal atmosphere finally it's begin to produce one bud, sad but ok rather than nothing, the blossom lasting about a week actually this specie is not suitable for equator region.Zain

Thats so beautiful ! I have to agree this one is a bit finicky about its requirements of a winter rest to bloom, as I do not give any of my plats a winter rest, this one has never bloomed for me, even though the other dendrobes requiring a winter rest have bloomed.

Like you, Amey, I don't really give my orchids much of a winter's rest. Too many orchids to treat some one way and the other another. I guess I just got lucky this year with this one. It really has finally put on a lovely display for the first time in years of growing it.

    Cheers,
    BD
