Default Blc. Rustic Spots in bloom

I'm enjoying finding my way around this great site, so thanks to Bruce for all his work on this. Blc. Rustic Spots is one of my favorite orchids, because it is a reliable windowsill bloomer (4-5 blooms on every new growth, year-round), it is fragrant (more on that later), and it undergoes a striking color change during bloom. I haven't kept up with all the classification changes, so forgive me if my terminology is out of date, but Blc. Rustic Spots is intriguing because it is quite close to the species, being the offspring of two primary hybrids. Blc. Rustic Spots = Bl. Richard Mueller (B. nodosa x L. milleri) x C. Landate (aclandiae x guttata).

As can be seen in the photos, Rustic Spots takes its form from B. nodosa and its color from the other three grandparents. Like B. nodosa, which is known for its night-time fragrance, Rustic Spots is nicely fragrant, but only from early morning until noon! The flowers are a rich dark red when first opened, but slowly change through orange to yellow before fading. The first spike pictured opened about ten days before the second, thus the color difference. My plant is an unnamed clone, purchased several years ago in bloom at a local nursery.

Very beautiful and healthy blooms, its always nice to have flowers that change color so dramatically over time, you get the joy of having two different orchids for the price and space of one LOL. This one not only gets the color but also a lot of form from C. landate.
