    Default Vanda Sunray

I am pleased to be able to boast that I have a flower count of 10 here - ranging in size from 5 inches ( the lowest flowers) to 2.5 inch - the top flower, just opened. I expect it will end up an inch or so bigger.
According the Groves book - the best and most up-to-date one I know on Vandas and their hybrids, 7 is an average good count for a large flowered Vanda hybrid ;and 10 is the tops. Of course we do see more occasionally - I have had two spikes at a time adding up to 13 quite recently.
In terms of awards, the UK system uses ancient records and they pull out the ones for V.sanderiana when first seen - and say oh yes, a good one ought to have 18 flowers, and so on ; those were on the best large plants collected, when collecting began, and even then, those big old strong plants were subjected to great stress in travelling half way round the world on sailing ships or slow steamships and when they first flowered would have done exceptionally well , probably never repeated, in fact with the abysmal state of knowledge of how to grow tropical plants at that time, they may well have been dead within a very few years - but there they stand in the record bopoks, so the chances of getting a high award fora vanda today in Uk are rather low.
