Default Some Aerides? X Mimi Palmer

The blooms on this one are much prettier in person and the fragrance makes me go weak at the knees, but the tag is giving me a headache. I always try to find out what I can about a new orchid and realize that sometimes there are misspellings, etc. on tags, but usually can maneuver around the word puzzles and bad handwriting. I absolutely can't find this one.

The tag reads "Aer. Pralisan x Mimi Palmer." I can't find Aerides Pralisan (or some logical variation of the spelling) anywhere. It doesn't appear on IOSPE or RHS. I asked my friend who has more of the same and all the tags read this way. Anyone want to hazzard a guess?

Hi Trish. At a guess and I mean a guess! its Ascocenda Pralisan x Vanda Mimi Palmer!? A fragrant vanda cross. Not sure about the Aerides part though. Confused .com. Treat as Vanda Care. The Aer may be the abbreviated Asc for Ascocenda.

Ascocenda and Vanda are commonly crossed with many many magnificent results. I have a cross between the two and the fragrance is heavenly.

So the consensus is not an aerides at all? I love ascocendas, too--I've got 3 now--but I snatched this one up because of that "ooh! there's something I don't have!" impulse. I just figured that V. Mimi Palmer is one of those orchids that stamps its progeny with its own 'look' and that's why it didn't look very foxtail-like. I guess now I'll have to find a real Aerides to add to my collection. :-D

The "pralisan" part is still a mystery, though. I've browsed the ascocenda p's and r's on RHS and nothing comes close.

OK, now my friend is getting these with typed labels and the "Aer." is unquestionable. They are coming from a many-decades long time orchid breeder who still has all his encyclia crosses tagged with "Epi. cordigera".

Now I'm thinking maybe he just has not updated his classifications in a while. Is there anything that used to be aerides that was later reclassified as something else? It would be nice if these could keep their heritage.

    Lightbulb

This name issue has raised its head again, as my friends are selling some of their vandas and asked if I had ever solved the "Pralisan" mystery. Their typed tags are old and faded and my friend is confident that of some of the letters, others not so much. She is confident of p-a-lisan.

Last night I stumbled across Aeridovanda Photisan. It is the right color and shape to have produced the flowers we've been seeing when crossed on Mimi Palmer. and our mystery cross is MUCH more fragrant than any of the other Mimi Palmers I've smelled. If I had paid better attention to the OTForum, I would have seen the lovely Aerv. Photisan Cathy Day posted a few months after I posted this question.

My friend is concerned because the third letter is definitely an A and not O, but how many of us have a Bc. Little Mermaid 'Janet' with a pretty, official looking, typed tag calling it "Little Marmaid"?

What do you think? Do we have a match?
