Default Vanda Velthuis x Vanda Varavuth

This is a very free flowering semi-terete orchid. Flowers are 4 inches in size. It grows in the full sun until noon and 50% shade after that. There are some blemishes on the blooms caused by thrips.

Very nice! My vanda are growing and look good but aren't flowering. Sigh... I'll just have to sit and enjoy everyone's beautiful flowers for now. Thanks for sharing!

It's a lovely orchid, even with the thrip damage - which I wouldn't have noticed had you not pointed it out. I have had them in my gardenias, and they show up pretty well against the white - ughhh - hate them. I have just found an organic insecticide called that uses various oils, including garlic oil, to control mites, aphids, and thrips. You probably already have something better, but I thought I'd pass it along. I'd be happy to send specifics in a PM if you like.

Thanks Maura. Halloamey recommended imidacloprid to me some time ago when I had a serious infestation and it was extremely effective. However I have been lazy lately and have not sprayed the chemical the last 4 months. I just sprayed yesterday so the problem should be taken care of. I should apply the chemical every 3 months.

That is a very pleasant Vanda. Nice shape and simple colour pattern. I really hope that it is just thrips damage and not a virus, because the pattern looks very much like the colour break virus. But I have never seen it in Vandas, it is very specific to Cattleya alliance and Odontoglossums. Time will tell.
