    Default Vanda Gordon Dillon 'Pink'

This plant last flowered in February I find - only one spike then, but two now. However, the flower count this time only totals 11 or 12 at best ( a couple of flowers at least have fallen off - the height of flowering was a couple of weeks ago, probably). 10 on a single spike is very good, with these large flowered hybrids - according to David Groves, in his excellent book about them , and certainly it is a figure I rarely exceed and don't even match quite as often as I'd like. What is to be expected from two spikes I'm not sure - if the plant is strong enough to double spike why shouldn't both spikes be the same - what do you think ? maybe the total is good - I am just being greedy or hypercritical perhaps.
These are your normal 4 or 4 1/2 inch flowers, normal texture - not a tetraploid . Plant is approaching the point where it needs repotting, and if I can manage to be at home for more than a couple of months continuously maybe it will get done; this week has been all rush to water everything after a spell away before I am off to Italy for a few weeks, and I have been getting some ( many ! ) of my dendrobiums into an unheated structure to finish off their growths, dry off, and then chill out, in order to get a good flowering after Christmas. Of which, more anon...

Excellent variety of Gordon Dillon. As to the number of flowers per spike 10 - 12 is very good for the modern 'complex' strap leaf vandas. The most flowers I have personally seen on a vanda was a V Rothchildiana with 22 flowers on 1 spike in 1970 and of course that was a primary hybrid. I know that V sanderiana often put out tremendous spikes. Last year at our local show I saw this 'Best of Show' vanda, V Blitz' Hearthrob x Fuch's Delight, with 2 spikes sporting a dozen flowers on each spike. It was a huge plant with a few keikis.

I am glad to have seen this plant you show, Yew Sung - it gives me a target to aim for ! It has lovely foliage , at least for the last 5 years or so , although the older, lower leaves are now black spotted ( bacterial damage when the microbes inevitably present got encouraged by water and fertliser , I guess .
The slightly variable leaf length shows when it has had good seasons and better ones, too. What caan't be seen here is whether the two spikes come from opposite nodes on one pair of leaves, or from successive pairs of leaves - indicating that it missed out on one occasion - node not quite "ripe" enough probably, and is now making up.
But an enviable plant, and a winner anywhere I'd guess - the flowers are so well held, above the leaves, too.

I certainly don't think your hypercritical or greedy. I have always believed in setting high standards to begin with and keeping to them if at all possible or practical. Of course this is all relative and in my mind I would be extremely happy to have your kind of flower count on two spikes Geoff. Much fun and enjoyment on your trip to Italy! AL
