Talking Maria's first Laelia anceps of 2011

This orchid has a funny story. I had ostensibly purchased a Laelia anceps var. alba 'San Bar Oaxaquena' back in 2010. When that one bloomed, I realized it was not an alba, and I sent a picture to the vendor, who promptly sent a replacement division this year. THIS is the replacement. It's supposed to be a Laelia anceps var. alba 'SanBar Oaxaquena' but it's clearly not an alba.

I'm simply calling it a Laelia anceps var. sanderiana at this point. Whatever it's called, its beautiful, don't you agree? This photo was taken today.

I have other Laelias waiting in the wings, either in spike, or in bud, and they are eager to show themselves off.

    Maria

Nice, Maria, but I would have to agree with you that the seller sent the wrong one again. I would contact them again with this pic. Perhaps all the ones he/she has were mislabeled.

Nice Maria I also got one, already sent to heaven I would say semi alba actually is very pretty, in this genus they are so many variations. I also got alba form very expensive here in Malaysia.

That is a miss-labelled beauty again hehe. I hope he sends you the right one this time. Also looking forward to your other Laelias.

lovely Laelia anceps.... it has potential to make a lovely display when stronger with 5 flowers all with that nice wide petals.

this species is so variable that quite a lot of varieties and clones are around... unfortunately, some are mislabeled.

firstly though, the name Laelia anceps var. alba 'Sanbar Oaxaquena' is not correct. The clone 'Sanbar Oaxaquena' is not an albino clone nor is it albinistic etc etc.. albinism in plants is generally an inability to produce anthocyanins, ie the red pigments on flowers.... and the clone 'Sanbar Oaxena' has the pigments on the labellum where it wraps around the column.

second, looking at the Laelia anceps 'Sanbar Oaxaquena', it appears that your plant does not resemble the lighter pink tones on the labellum of the flower..

so, apologies for the lengthy post, and thanks for sharing this lovely flower... one can never have too many clones of this species...

    cheers
    tim

No problems. The vendor asked for a picture. I'm waiting to see. I agree that the Oaxaquena is not a pure alba, but the lip on mine is way too dark of a purple to be the Oaxaquena.

I dunno at this point. What concerns me though is that most of my Laelias come from this vendor, and I just spent 350 bucks on my dream orchid. So, I hope they didn't mislabel that one.
